What happened

Shares of CrowdStrike (CRWD), the cybersecurity software company, soared 8.3% on Friday as security stocks rallied on an upbeat broker survey and a fresh hacking scare. Palo Alto Networks (PANW) jumped 7.2%, Zscaler (ZS) 7.3% and Cloudflare (NET) 7.3%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.52%.

Evercore ISI’s quarterly survey of channel partners, the resellers that sell security software to companies, found healthy pipelines and an improving budget outlook into year-end, with no sign of demand dropping off, 24/7 Wall St and TIKR reported. Partners ranked identity protection, AI governance and cloud security as top priorities, and the survey named CrowdStrike and Palo Alto “the leading beneficiaries of AI-driven security spending,” according to GuruFocus, syndicated by Yahoo Finance.

The shares closed at $257.57, up 8.3% from the previous close, their best day since 14 September.

Why it matters

The scare came on Wednesday, when PHP, the programming language behind an estimated 70% of websites, released emergency patches for two critical flaws, nicknamed PHP2Shell, that let attackers run their own code on web servers. Cloudflare logged the first attack attempts hours before the fixes were out, Investing.com reported. Evercore also flagged the flaws as a reason for higher security spending, according to GuruFocus.

“The PHP situation will lead to a mass of incidents, it’s one of the biggest vulns in years,” security researcher Kevin Beaumont said, according to Investing.com.

There’s a twist. Palo Alto said in a security advisory this week that every supported version of its PAN-OS firewall software is affected by the flaws, Cyber Kendra reported. Its stock rose anyway.

What the market is telling us

CrowdStrike’s shares moved 5% or more on 30 of the last 252 sessions. The last move at least this big in the same direction was on 14 September 2026, when the stock rose 13.8%. The stock is up 119.8% this year, and at $257.57 it sits 7.6% below its 52-week closing high of $278.86 from 6 October 2026.

Our view: a survey and a scare can carry a stock for a day; for one that has more than doubled this year, the real test is whether those year-end budgets show up in CrowdStrike’s next quarterly results.
