Trane Technologies (TT) reported third-quarter revenue of $6.76 billion, up 18% year on year and ahead of the $6.50 billion analysts expected, according to Investing.com and GuruFocus. Adjusted earnings of $4.86 a share, up 25%, beat the $4.74 S&P Global consensus cited by GuruFocus. But the company kept its full-year profit forecast, and the stock fell 3.9% on Thursday, when the results came out before the open, to close at $431.10.

The selling continued on Friday. Trane was down 2.6% at $419.97 as of 9:31 a.m. ET.

What stood out

Demand was not the problem. Trane, which makes heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems for buildings, said organic revenue rose 16% and orders rose 20%, led by the Americas and by cooling for data centers, according to the release and GuruFocus. Its backlog, the orders it has yet to fill, rose 73% to $12.5 billion, 247 Wall St reported.

Profitability was the problem. The adjusted operating margin slipped about 0.4 points to 20.2%, and management cut its forecast for how much of the year’s growth will come from higher prices, Investing.com reported.

The outlook

Trane raised its 2026 forecast for organic revenue growth to about 11%, or about 13.5% including currency and acquisitions. It kept its adjusted earnings forecast at $15.20 to $15.30 a share and guided to about $3.40 to $3.50 for the fourth quarter, according to the release and Investing.com.

That combination, more sales with no more profit, is what greeted investors. Investing.com’s coverage of the results set the share drop against the unchanged earnings forecast and the pressure on margins. A beat on both lines, it turned out, was not enough without a higher profit target.

Thursday’s drop was Trane’s biggest since 22 October, when it fell 4.8%. The stock is still up 10.8% this year, but at $431.10 it sat 14.4% below its 52-week closing high of $503.46 from 25 June.

Our take

The order book says the data center cooling boom is intact, and a 73% jump in backlog sets up next year. What disappointed was the margin: Trane is selling more but not keeping more of each dollar. Next quarter we’d watch whether pricing firms up and the margin turns back up as that backlog is delivered.
