Stock Market Today: Anthropic's IPO Filing Lifts Chip Stocks as Brazil Crashes
The S&P 500 rose 0.70% and chip stocks 2.82% after Anthropic's IPO filing revived the AI trade, while Brazil's main index had its worst day since March 2020.
Stocks bounced on Monday after Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, made its IPO filing public and showed investors how fast its sales are growing. The S&P 500 rose 0.70% to 7,676.77 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.82%, led by chipmakers. Brazil went the other way: its main index fell 13.88% after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday’s runoff.
Anthropic’s books revived the AI trade
Anthropic’s prospectus shows $16.3 billion of revenue in the first half of 2026, against $4.6 billion for all of 2025. It plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, but the price range and the size of the raise are still blank, CNBC and Fortune reported. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq had just had two losing weeks on worries about AI spending, and CNBC and Yahoo Finance tied Monday’s bounce to the filing.

“The market needed this, just like it needed SpaceX,” Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC.
Brazil’s election bet unwound in a day
Lula beat Senator Flávio Bolsonaro 51.8% to 48.2%, and investors who had bet on a Bolsonaro win sold. Brazil’s Bovespa fell 13.88%, its worst day since March 2020, and a 10% drop set off a 30-minute trading halt, Reuters reported. The real ended about 8% weaker against the dollar.

Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom, which sell Meta its chips, said they are interested in buying up to $5 billion of the shares. Communication services, Meta’s sector, was the worst of the 11, down 1.42%.

December Brent settled at $115.81 a barrel, down 0.8%, and US crude fell 1.46%. The attacks have not stopped: Yemen’s Houthis said they fired missiles at Riyadh’s airport, which Saudi Arabia has not confirmed, and the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted missiles.
